Clements, James B., East St. Paul, Man.; University of Glasgow (Scotland), 1973; former staff, Beausejour District Hospital; physician, Department of Health and Community Services. Died June 20, 2000, aged 51; survived by his wife.

Diehl, Garth R., Winnipeg; University of Manitoba, 1946; family practice; FCFP; army reserve, WW II; former cofounder and director, Intensive Care Unit, Misericordia Hospital. Died June 23, 2000, aged 79; survived by his wife, Ruth, and 3 children. He established the Manitoba chapter of the College of Family Practice and was one of the founders and a past president of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Emanuel, Elliott, Dorval, Que.; Oxford University (England), 1941; psychiatry; MRCP, FAPA; former staff, Department of Medicine, Lachine General Hospital. Died July 10, 2000, aged 83.

Fuzi, Endre, Ottawa; University of Freiburg (Germany), 1949; MCFP; former physician, Health and Welfare Canada. Died May 14, 2000, aged 81; survived by his wife.

Gautreau, Raymond M., Joliette (Qué.); Université Laval, 1954; chirurgie orthopédique; ancien membre du personnel du Centre hospitalier régional de Lanaudière. Décédé le 21 mai 2000, à l'âge de 72 ans.

Goldfarb, Harold P., Mont-Royal, Que.; McGill University, 1949; MCFP; former staff, Department of General Practice, Jewish General Hospital. Died July 1, 2000, aged 79.

Hall, Henry G. (Harry), Toronto; University of Toronto, 1929; MCFP, FRCPC, CRCPC; former staff, St. Michael's Hospital; courtesy staff, North York General Hospital. Died Sept. 7, 2000, aged 98. Colleague Thomas Pashby recalls: “Many general practitioners go on to specialize, but Harry Hall reversed the trend and after having a referral practice in internal medicine decided to become a family doctor at 1050 Avenue Rd. in Toronto, where he practised for 53 years. He told me the reason for change was that a referral practice had no follow-up, which meant he saw the patients only once. ‘I wanted to see them in their homes, see the family, deliver their babies, become part of the family.’ ”

Hobson, Arthur C., Cornwall, England; English Conjoint Board (England), 1939; internal medicine; MRCS, LRCP, MRCP(Lond.), FRCPC; former staff, Medicine Hat General Hospital. Died June 11, 2000, aged 83.

Johnston, William H., Etobicoke, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1951; pediatrics; FRCPC; former staff, Hospital for Sick Children and North York General Hospital. Died June 18, 2000, aged 72; survived by his wife, Tottie, and children Dr. Richard, David, and Laurie.

Léger, Eugène, Moncton (N.-B.); Université Laval, 1950; ancien membre du personnel de l'Hôpital Dr. Georges-L. Dumont. Décédé le 6 juillet 2000, à l'âge de 76 ans.

MacLean, Norman J., Inverness, NS; Dalhousie University, 1945; general surgery; former chief of staff, St. Mary's Hospital (Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital). Died July 3, 2000, aged 79; survived by his wife, Dorothy, and 3 children. His obituary in the National Post stated: “In the days before medicare he never sent a bill, taking payment mostly in fish, farm products or not at all. He never turned anyone away and would make house calls on a snowplow or horse and wagon to make it through the snow. Despite failing health, he continued to visit patients at Inverness Hospital as his wife pushed his wheelchair from room to room.” He also spent 15 years as a Tory member of the provincial legislature. “Patients who came to see him could get their blood pressure checked and a promise to have their road graded in the same visit,” his obituary stated.

Muth, Harvey A., Victoria; University of Manitoba, 1948; internal medicine; FRCPC. Died of cancer June 26, 2000, aged 75; survived by his wife, Sheila, and 4 children. His obituary stated: “He was a special man who lived and died with dignity. In quiet, gentle ways he touched many lives.”

Osborne, Darrell F., Kelowna, BC; University of Manitoba, 1945; obstetrics/gynecology, FACS; former chair, Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology and Department of Continuing Education, Royal Inland Hospital. Died May 14, 2000, aged 80.

Parnell, John L., West Vancouver; University of Edinburgh (Scotland), 1939; internal medicine; FACP, FRCPC; former physician, School of Nursing and attending staff, Vancouver General Hospital; consultant, Shaughnessy Hospital; clinical instructor, University of British Columbia. Died June 1, 2000, aged 91.

Poon, Peter Yui-Chee, West Vancouver; University of Hong Kong, 1966; diagnostic radiology; FRCPC; former head, diagnostic imaging, British Columbia Cancer Agency, Vancouver Cancer Centre; staff radiologist, diagnostic imaging, St. Michael's Hospital; professor, UBC. Died May 23, 2000, aged 60.

Sullivan, John F., North Bay, Ont.; Queen's University, 1962; former staff psychiatrist, Medicine and Mental Health Clinic, North Bay Psychiatric Hospital; staff, North Bay Mental Health Clinic. Died June 10, 2000, aged 63; survived by his wife, Karen.
