As past chair and longtime member of the Regina Public school Board, he helped develop the Balfour Special Tutorial Program for unwed mothers and the DeGroot School for special-needs children, and he pioneered a program to keep dropouts in school. In honour of his service, the McLurg Elementary School was named in his honour in 1979. Died July 1, 1999, aged 90; survived by children Dr. Robert and Judy.
