Bottomley, Harold William, Kelowna, BC; University of Manitoba, 1943, internal medicine. Died Jan. 6, 2007, aged 88. “Dr. Bottomley served in the Army Medical Corps during World War II in Italy and Holland, 1944–5. Following his return to Canada in 1945, he joined the Winnipeg Clinic where he practised allergy and internal medicine until his retirement in 1983. He earned a specialist certificate in internal medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1949, was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1959 and became a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 1976. Dr. Bottomley was the consummate gentle healer; he lived his life with compassion, curiosity, humour and humility. Pre-deceased by his wife, Joan, he leaves to grieve and to celebrate his life, 4 children, 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends.”

Lavallée, Jean D., Saint-Laurent, Que.; Université de Montréal, 1949, psychiatry. Died Oct. 16, 2006, aged 75.
Loney, Elgin McConnell, Chelsey, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1948. Died Jan. 1, 2007, aged 82. “Dr. Loney practised general medicine in a rural setting for 54 years, over 30 of which he served as a Norfolk County coroner. With his wife, a nurse, he worked tirelessly from his home-based office with weekend hours, home births and countless house-calls, often with only his medical bag and a flashlight. Dr. Loney also served on the staff of Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital for over 50 years, many of them as secretary for the medical staff. He was courageous in danger and as resourceful as conditions allowed. As they said at his funeral: ‚We shall not see his like again.'”
McCulloch, John Clement, Toronto; University of Toronto, 1938, ophthalmology. Died Jan. 10, 2007, aged 92. “Dr. McCulloch served in World War II as ophthalmologist with the rank of group captain. He was a pioneer of Canadian ophthalmology, particularly in microsurgery, during a long career as chief at Toronto Western Hospital for 15 years, at Toronto General Hospital for 21 years and as chair at the University of Toronto, where he became professor emeritus upon retirement. His colleagues established the Clement McCulloch Lectureship, given each year at the University of Toronto Annual Research Day. Dr. McCulloch was the first Canadian president of the American Ophthalmological Society, and, in 2006, he received the first Lifetime Achievement Award of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society. His influence on generations of medical students, professional colleagues and patients is legendary.”

Pershad, Suresh Ram, Miramichi, NB; Osmania University, India, 1969, internal medicine. Died Jan. 3, 2007, aged 64. “He started his practice at the former Hotel Dieu Hospital in Chatham in 1980 and continued to serve the community through working at the Region 7 Hospital until the onset of his illness in 2006. At the time of his illness, he held the position of chief of internal medicine at the Miramichi Regional Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Rambha and his 3 children, Rashmi, Sailesh and Sarvesh.”

Wahba, Yosri Saad, Estevan, Sask.; Ain Shams University, Egypt, 1958, general surgery. Died Jan. 2, 2007, aged 70. “A loving husband and wonderful father. Trained in the ‚old school,' Yosri could do it all: surgery, obstetrics, orthopaedics and family medicine. A valuable and caring physician to the community of Estevan, Sask. for 30 years.”
Yazdi, Rochan, Sherbrooke, Que.; Université Claude Bernard, 1937, nuclear medicine. Died June 26, 2006, aged 93.
