The patient in the article by Lin et al (regarding brain and neck injuries secondary to being struck by an e-scooter while on the sidewalk) had no memory of the accident. Having had a near miss by a speedy scooter myself, a mechanism of my near injury is worth mentioning.
Just like motorists coming to an intersection when traffic lights are in the process of turning to red, e-scooter drivers do not want to wait, and accelerate to beat the lights. The one that narrowly missed me was trailing at ninety degrees to my path, hidden from view by the corner building at a four way mid-town intersection. It will be difficult to deter this kind of behaviour, except by legislating scooters off the sidewalk when travelling at speed.
