Thank you for this comprehensive guideline for pain reduction during vaccination. I am a nurse employed in several pediatric primary care offices since 1984. This topic has always interested me. I have led a task force at my current facility to disseminate these techniques. One very effective distraction and nerve transmission-blocking technique we have found very effective and easy to apply is this: Have child or nurse rub the alcohol wipe on the opposite inner wrist compared to the arm being used for the site of injection. Just before needle penetration, have the child or teen blow hard on the cold spot on that wrist. The cold sensation rushes up the arm and almost all patients have told us that they experienced either much less or no pain from the injection.

This technique has been so well received that we wish we could find an effective way to apply it with preschoolers, toddlers or infants!
