Founded by Adventists, the sanitarium at Battle Creek, Michigan, promoted hydrotherapy, exercise and a vegetarian diet. In 1894 its chief physician, John Harvey Kellogg, and his brother William Keith Kellogg invented corn flakes as a dietary substitute for bread.
