We have recently published the book "Disaster Mental Health Community Planning" (www.disastermentalhealthplan.com) which we wrote to encourage communities to prepare for the mental health impact following a disaster. Most communities in the US only have an emergency medical response. We became interested in this issue after we saw the long-term impact of our town’s Sandy Hook School shooting. Everything we are concerned about from a mental health standpoint is far worse in the pandemic due to the number impacted and the duration. The podcast was right on the mark. We could address additional issues, such as newer forms of trauma-specialized treatment, how employers need to support returning employees in terms of mental health, and focusing now on the most vulnerable populations. We can't wait until this pandemic ends. As you see, in the US the situation includes all the issues raised including unsupportive leadership, lack of PPE, misinformation, overcrowded hospitals, and much uncertainty.
