The low plasma level in preterm infants continues until a postnatal age of at least 6 months and is lower than the plasma level in term infants fed an identical unsupplemented infant formula [46], and the level might be extremely low in preterm infants who develop BPD [47]. Since oxidative stress is implicated in the development of BPD, the low level of blood selenium may increase the vulnerability of preterm infants to hyperoxia-induced oxidative stress injury.
