History: in September 2005, the Lancet published a letter16 from a group of prominent academics, together with a strongly worded editorial17 attacking the publisher of the journal, Reed–Elsevier, for its support for the arms trade. The wholly owned subsidiary of Reed–Elsevier, Spearhead, had organized the biannual defence exhibition in London for several years.
