2017, CarbonCitation Excerpt :Due to a low metabolism and the limited self-healing ability of articular cartilage, articular cartilage disease has an overall occurrence rate of 5% and an occurrence rate of at most 50% in special groups, such as athletes and the elderly [1,2]. Conventional treatments for the disease include arthroscopic treatment, micro-fracturing and autologous chondrocyte transplantation [3–7]. However, these treatments can only be used in early articular lesions and have certain drawbacks, such as immunological rejection and donor site morbidity [8].
