Diagnostic Accuracy in the 21st Century - No Time for Conceit
2022, American Journal of MedicineA comparison of different strategies used to invite subjects with a positive faecal occult blood test to a colonoscopy assessment. A randomised controlled trial in population-based screening programmes
2014, Preventive MedicineCitation Excerpt :Such aversive behaviours might be less frequent when subjects with a positive FIT meet with a different health professional, in a dedicated setting aimed at addressing those barriers, attitudes and preferences that influence the decision to undergo the recommended assessments. The higher compliance level after consultation with screening practitioners as compared to GPs in our setting might indeed be linked to their specific training in counselling FIT + patients, enabling them to present more comprehensive information and possibly more convincing arguments that address the patient's fears and objections (Federici et al., 2005; Federici et al., 2006b; Schattner and Gilad, 2002). This hypothesis is consistent with findings from previous reports (Bastani et al., 2004) showing that the provision of written informational materials or telephone counselling that address the fears related to abnormal findings can be effective in increasing the proportion of screen-positive individuals who receive a timely follow-up.
Increasing incidence of colorectal cancer in Asia: Implications for screening
2005, Lancet OncologyCitation Excerpt :Primary-care physicians are crucial players in the implementation of cancer screening programmes. Although they support the principle of screening for colorectal cancer, primary-care physicians are not familiar with recommendations and have done little to implement the policy.41 Professional bodies in the region need to produce uniformity in strategies and general consensus before policy makers and governments can move forward in providing resources for screening.
