I found the editor's comment (in the synopsis of this research paper that appeared in a recent print issue of CMAJ) that this outcome ‘may seem counterintuitive’, offensive. Perhaps the older surgeons many years of experience might have something to do with the outcome.
I retired 5 years ago in part because the college put the full court press on me to retire once I turned 62. Other doctors I worked with experienced similar treatment.
When I talk to my friends they find it difficult to find the kind of comprehensive care I hope I delivered as so many doctors now work part time or in walk-in clinics not attached to an ongoing practices.
While your periodical decries any form of discrimination the editor's comments sound like ageism. They should find it concerning that the younger surgeons have poorer outcomes and research should be aimed at finding out why.
