Dr. Roy Forsey recalls: “He served in the same destroyer escort group as Prince Philip and represented the Royal Canadian Navy when General MacArthur received the surrender of the Japanese.”
Harrison, R. Cameron, Vancouver; University of Alberta, 1943; general surgery; DABS, FACS, FRCSC; former head, Department of Surgery, Vancouver General Hospital; professor emeritus and head, Department of Surgery, University of British Columbia; founding member, Canadian Association of General Surgeons; president, International Surgical Group and Canadian Association of Gastroenterology. Died Oct 25, 2002, aged 82; survived by his wife, Lorraine, and 5 sons. His son, Dr. Robert Harrison, commented: “He discovered a gastric acid inhibitory hormone in the antrum of the stomach — his ‘antral chalone’ — which in retrospect could be somatostatin. He did not receive credit for its discovery but he demonstrated, in the 1950s, a totally different concept of gastric acid secretion controls and balances. In his private life, he led his family into many adventures, and they led him into a few as well.”
Hasinoff, David, Toronto; University of Manitoba, 1935; MCFP; former chief of staff, Vermilion Hospital; board member, Vegreville Auxiliary Hospital; longest serving coroner in Alberta. Died Oct. 17, 2002, aged 89. His daughter, Dr. Jacqueline Jirsch, observed: “ ‘Doc Hasinoff’ practised in remote rural communities in Saskatchewan and north-eastern Alberta from 1938 until 1994, and by default he served as ambulance driver, undertaker, veterinarian, dentist, educator and mayor.”
