It is regretful that CMA has chosen to cut parts of the CMAJ that fostered relationships between physicians, its target audience, and drew attention to the soft but human sides of practicing medicine. Does this withdrawal include the section on Humanities as well? While recovery from the negative hits that patient and inter-collegial relationships took during our pandemic response is slow, and burnout has reached its highest level ever in the history of our profession, this doesn't seem like the right time to withdraw from highlighting news that feeds the passions that keep physicians coming back. Did you place a cost on supporting physicians through the CMAJ? As wonderful as pure research is, it may not be the sole reason that readers return to the CMAJ month after month. I expect a study was done to compare preferences for different parts of the CMAJ. It matters little that I regret your decision as I may be overwhelmed by the multitude who do. Yet it seems unfair that either pure research or maybe your search for internal efficiencies, i.e., lower costs, should transcend eligibility criteria to publish in the sole Canadian national medical magazine which represents physicians of all specialties, and may be the only CMA distribution they read. Is it possible there's a greater purpose for the CMAJ, such as uniting physicians in their relationships with one another and their patients?
