I happened to read the synopsis 'Projected estimates of cancer in Canada 2020' in CMAJ Aug print issue(1). The authors and editor are worried about pancreatic cancer and lack of tools to detect the disease early. I know a simple tool that can detect pancreatic cancer early. All the persons above 50 years of age with family history of cancer should have abdominal ultrasound included in their annual health check up. An abdominal ultrasound can detect early cancers in pancreas, liver, kidney and spleen. If the ultrasound is positive, additional investigations like CT scan or MRI scan can be done. Early diagnosis and treatment can save many people and reduce mortality. CMA should instruct all the physicians and surgeons to include abdominal ultrasound for persons above 50 years of age in their annual health check up, although I am not aware of any published studies or guidelines that recommend this approach.
