The very mention of Chilblains brought back memories of the condition which tormented me throughout my teenage years in the UK. Every winter, the backs of my fingers would become red, swollen and intensely itchy, and with scratching should develop transverse cracks which would bleed. The only release was to soak the hands in very hot water, so hot as to be painful, but preferable to the itching, then in very cold water . This would eventually give some relief.
The condition seemed to be related to extremes of temperature, going from very cold, to rooms heated with fireplaces. It stopped immediately on coming to Canada, and was gettinge better after leaving boarding school.Competing Interests: None declared.References
