Dear Editors,
I could NOT possibly agree more with Raymond Simkus in his critique of what physicians need to insist on and be involved with in terms or the development and standardization of Electonic Medical Record systems.
As a recent JAMA article featured in a CMAJ news article outlines (https://cmajnews.com/2019/05/21/how-medical-trainees-actually-spend-thei...), Medical Trainees spent 43 % of their time with EMR systems (Electronic Health Records or EHR in the U.S.) versus 13 % of their time on direct patient care. Already quite some years ago, the American Medical Association had put out a statement outlining that it was requesting of all of the U.S. Electronic Health Record vendors that a strong standardization be adhered to. Doctors and governments ignore this absolute necessity to their peril.
As per the literature — and never mind what it does for patient care, which can be critically awful if one’s EMR system is bad — many MDs are choosing to redirect into another career or opting for earlier retirement than planned rather than battling the EMR debacle. If an EMR system is developed well or, as is usually more often the case rather than the prior, if one is lucky enough to have an EMR system that some very dedicated MDs have helped to standardize and develop...
