Dear Dr. Campitelli
Your retrospective 1 year review compares high to intermediate dose statins and finds no difference. Not surprising as most statin trials run for 4 years and recognized that LDL lowering is 60-80% and intermediate dose. This does not mean deprescribing is appropriate or a lack of benefit. I would also question reduced side effects given the remarkable safety of these medications. A similar logic would also stop ASA and BP meds in a population at high risk for CV events when randomized trials show benefit in the elderly.
At most you may consider a prospective trial and actually ask if deprescribing is safe.Competing Interests: I have given educational talks on lipid lowering therapy and statins
