The quote states that self-interest is the motivation for altruism. Self motivation to serve people with disabilities is the core on which health care could be developed. There are only few universities in the USA that have included medical disability in the curricula. (1) There was also a group of Medical Professionals who wanted such curriculum to be included in India.“We often complain that doctors don’t understand patients with disabilities. I have seen people with disabilities often go to a doctor with an ailment but doctors focus only on their disability instead,” said Dr Singh, a doctor with motor disability.(2)
Disability education integrated into medical school curricula results in:
-It is suggested that a curricula will lead to improved quality of care for people with disability by ensuring clinicians have the right knowledge and skills, not necessarily changing attitudes.
-Decreased stigmatization about people with disability.
-Increased opportunities to learn the complexities of medical care.
