I read this article with quite a bit of interest, as I have worked as a locum physician in Nunavut as well as Northwest Territories. I completely agree that provider turnover and lack of continuity is a huge issue, but I feel that it's made substantially worse because the EMR hinders the provision of care rather than enhancing it. EMR is a very powerful tool when used correctly, but Nunavut uses an archaic EMR that was never meant for use in primary care. Not only is the EMR cumbersome and limited in terms of functionality, but it has a sharp learning curve that makes it hard for new providers to get used to. If you ask me, using a more robust EMR will not only enhance patient care but will also aid in provider recruitment and retention. If I understand this article correctly EMR is still being rolled out in some of the communities, but even where it is used it is sorely lacking in utility and benefit.
