Burn out among doctors is a global phenomenon. There is a tendency to get physically or mentally exhausted. This feeling of exhaustion or helplessness makes the practicing physician look tired and dejected with the profession. This phenomenon has many contributing factors depending upon the environment and policies of a particular place of work or a community or a nation. For example, stricter rules adopted by the governing council like doctors cannot advertise, they cannot practice if working as a faulty in a medical institution, or poor scope for promotion to a higher rank or the growing dissatisfaction of the patients are some of the notable components that lead to impaired physician syndrome. The advent of digital health including electronic records and more automation further dampen the spirit of the doctors. This leads to a poorer physician-patient relationship, reduced efficiency, or clinical skills. In India, the spiraling cost of medical education and possibly fewer mentors to follow result in loss of interest in the profession as well as in medicine. Violence against doctors, media-based accusations and the loss of nobility add to the burn out syndrome. This atmosphere needs to change. The family physician needs to get rejuvenated and the service-minded mindset has to resurface.
