East, William Henry Sparling, Fernie, British Columbia; University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, 1941. Died June 23, 2007, aged 94. “Dr. East was a founding member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. He never stopped serving his patients and the community for 46 years. His greatest passion was his family.” He is survived by his wife, Mary, children, Stewart, Craig, Fraser and Blair, 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Graham, Norah Catherine, St. Albert, Alberta; Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1976, family medicine and psychiatry. Died Aug. 19, 2007, aged 56. After practising for many years as a family physician in Wadena and Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and Digby, Nova Scotia, Dr. Graham obtained her fellowship in psychiatry in 1993, and subsequently practised in Halifax, Nova Scotia; Lloydminster, Alberta; and Edmonton, Alberta. She was predeceased by her eldest son, Kenneth Matthew, in 2007, and is survived by her husband, Dr. Kenneth T.A. Graham and children, Alice, Lisa, Donald and Mark. “She was widely read and a witty raconteur.”
Larsen, Anthony Alfred, Victoria, British Columbia; University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, 1946, public health. Died Oct. 30, 2007, aged 88.
MacKinnon, Kenneth Joseph C., Antigonish, Nova Scotia; Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1945, urology. Died Oct. 8, 2007, aged 86. Dr. MacKinnon was the head of the Division of Urology at McGill University and later the chairman of the Medical Board and Director of Professional Services at the Royal Victoria Hospital. In 1958, he was a key member of the transplant team that performed one of the first successful kidney transplants in the world. From 1979 to 1982 he was the executive director of the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, after which he became chief of staff at the Halifax Infirmary. Dr. MacKinnon also served as president of the Canadian Urological Association and the Canadian Academy of Urological Surgeons, and was awarded a Doctor of Laws degree by Dalhousie University and St. Francis Xavier University. Predeceased by his wife Ann Frances Meech, Dr. MacKinnon is survived by his second wife, Beryl MacIntosh, and children, Sheilagh, JoAnn, Dr. David, Mairi, Dr. Susan, Kenneth, Dr. Laura and Kathryn, 24 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. “A man of deep faith, humility, compassion and intellectual curiosity, he touched and changed many lives.”

Ratzlaff, Elmer Harry, Kihei, Maui, Hawaii; University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, 1965, family medicine. Died Oct. 29, 2007, aged 72.
Shenouda, Gamal Zaki, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; University of Ain Shams, Cairo, Egypt, 1953, general surgery. Died Sept. 6, 2007, aged 77.
Smith, John Arnold, Hantsport, Nova Scotia; Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1955; anesthesia. Died Oct. 24, 2007, aged 77.
Tonning, Henrik Odd, Rothesay, New Brunswick; Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1943, internal medicine. Died Oct. 27, 2007, aged 90. Dr. Tonning immigrated from Norway to Canada in 1929 and was a captain in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War II. Later, he was head of the Department of Medicine at the Saint John General Hospital from 1966 to 1982. Following his retirement, he served as deputy director at the Canadian Red Cross Transfusion Service until 1994. In 1982, he was accorded the title “Man of the Year in Medicine” by the Saint John Regional Hospital and, in 1994, was awarded an honorary degree from the University of New Brunswick. An accomplished fly fisherman, Dr. Tonning also loved cross-country skiing. He is predeceased by his wife, Wanda, and survived by his sons, Henrik and Stephen, 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
