Barber, Hugh Otter, Thornhill, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1945, otolaryngology. Died Dec. 14, 2006, aged 83. “Dr. Barber enjoyed guiding and teaching young doctors at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto. He was head of the ear, nose and throat department at Sunnybrook for many years and was a top expert in his field. Hugh was recognized and respected throughout the world and received many accolades. Predeceased by Joyce, his wife of 60 years, and children, Lorrie, George, Joe and David. He is survived by his children, Ann, Kathie and Harry (Scott), 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.”
Clark, Donald Raymond, Peter-borough, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1942, pediatrics. Died Jan. 20, 2007, aged 90. “Dr. Clark served in World War II as a medic and was promoted to major. He practised in Peter-borough and became chief of staff and first medical director of the Peter-borough Civic Hospital. He was chairman of the Advisory Committee to the Nursing Division at Fleming College and a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Review Committee in Pediatrics. He received the Glenn Sawyer Service Award in 1985. He is survived by 4 daughters, Judy (Scott), Sue (Rick), Meredith and Beth, 5 granddaughters and 2 great-granddaughters. He is predeceased by his wife, Lois.”

Fraser, George Alexander, Windsor, Ont.; registrable qualification granted by the English Conjoint Board, 1940, pediatrics. Died Dec. 26, 2006, aged 94.
Gray, Cameron Coutts, Toronto; University of Toronto, 1939, internal medicine. Died Feb. 1, 2007, aged 90.
Kierluk, Edward William, St. Thomas, Ont.; University of Western Ontario, 1943, general surgery. Died Oct. 2, 2006, aged 91.
McMurchy, Norman Ray, Kitchener, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1942. Died Feb. 5, 2007, aged 88.
Mayr, Heinz Otto, London, Ont.; Universität Wien, Austria, 1942. Died Jan. 27, 2007, aged 88, North Vancouver. “After completing specialty training in internal medicine in Vienna, Austria, Dr. Mayr immigrated to Canada with his family, interning in Moose Jaw, and writing the LMCC in 1952. He then worked at the Shute Institute in London, Ont., for a year before starting a general practice in the east of the city. He cared for his largely immigrant practice for almost 40 years and retired at age 72. House calls were a routine part of his practice. He is survived by his children, Maria, and Heinz, Michael and Barbara, who followed in his footsteps in general practice.”
Miller, Hugh Standfield, Vancouver; McGill University, 1952. Died Feb. 3, 2007, aged 82. “A successful ortho-pedic surgeon, Dr. Miller was also a man of many other talents, especially in the fields of music, art and nature. He was a master with his hands, whether it was using a scalpel in the operating room, tools in his workshop, a brush on canvas or a pen on paper. He practised at the Vancouver General Hospital and was director of the emergency department for 25 years. He oversaw the relocation and modernization of the department and facilitated the emergence of the new specialty of emergency medicine. Countless patients have benefited from his legacy. As a clinical teacher, his gentle, calm, yet confident manner was appreciated by generations of residents and students. Hugh is survived by his wife, anesthesiologist Dr. Mary Miller, and their 4 children, Duncan (also a physician), Lisa, John and Hamish.”
Nancekivell, Arthur Frank, Westmount, Que.; McGill University, 1942, internal medicine. Died Jan. 27, 2007, aged 92.
Russell, Peter Frederich, Calgary; University of Alberta, 1973, cardiology. Died Feb. 6, 2007, aged 57.
Shasko, Paul Anthony, Etobicoke, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1976, psychiatry. Died Feb. 7, 2007, aged 55.
Steinberg, Samuel, Winnipeg; University of Manitoba, 1954, family medicine. Died Jan. 26, 2007, aged 85. “Dr. Steinberg joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and spent 4 1/2 years overseas working in radar. He graduated from medical school in 1954 and practised medicine until 2006. Sam dedicated his life to medicine and to his patients. He felt that it was a privlege to get to know them and be part of their lives. He became a Certificant of the College of Family Physicians in 1971. In 2006 he travelled to Quebec to receive his fellowship in family medicine. Although weakened by illness, he walked across the stage to a standing ovation, an event that he said was a perfect end to a wonderful career. He is survived by his children, Fran (Lewis) and Bob (Julie), their mother, Edythe, and 6 grandchildren.”
