The June 20th 2006 essay by Dr Ursus crosses over the line from reflective-practice-based narrative to a cry for help from a colleague in need. Am I alone, am I overmedicalizing, or do the editors of the CMAJ also see the need to get Dr Ursus some professional help?

I have always enjoyed your insightful, honest, and well written column. This month, however, you have me seriously worried. In response to your "Query", I believe you are not just burnt out, but fried to a crisp.

The Alberta Medical Association has a very helpful, confidential, no- charge service through its Physician and Family Support Program. They hook you up with great counsellors for times like this. In case you live in Alberta, the phone number is 1-877-767-4637. If not, please look into what is available where you are. At the risk of promoting my own discipline, do you have a family doctor?

I sincerely wish you true friends, lots of your favorite exercise, the ability to say "no", and a healthy self-preservation instinct to help you get through this brutal time.

    Take care of yourself,

    Dr.Janet Northcott,MD,CCFP

P.S. I don't work for the AMA, honestly.
