Allen, James F., Dover Centre, Ont.; Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, 1981; orthopedic surgery; LRCPSI, FRCSC; former chief, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance-Public General Hospital Campus and chief, physiotherapy, St. Joseph's Campus. Died in a plane crash Jan. 17, 2004, aged 51; survived by his wife and 3 children. Colleague Cassie Harnarine told the Chatham Star: “He was the first fully trained orthopedic surgeon ever to set up practice in Chatham. He was a pleasant, down-to-earth man who was liked by everyone.”

Dickson, John T., Toronto; University of Toronto, 1962; otolaryngology; FRCSC; former staff, Toronto East General Hospital. Died of cancer Jan. 20, 2004, aged 74; survived by his wife, Maggie, and 2 children.

Hildebrand, Alvin F., McGill University, 1949; anesthesia; FRCPC; former staff, North York Branson Hospital. Died Jan. 19, 2004, aged 85.

Lizotte, André, Saint-Lambert (Qué.); Université Laval, 1951; DPH; membre du Corps royal canadien durant la Deuxième guerre mondiale et membre du Corps de santé royal canadien; ancien membre du personnel de l'hygiène publique et de l'administation hospitalière de l'Université de Montréal; directeur médical adjoint à l'Hôpital Notre-Dame; médecin inspecteur au Collège des médecins du Québec. Décédé le 17 janvier 2004, à l'âge de 84 ans.

Macdonald, Malcolm H., Calgary; McGill University, 1951; thoracic surgery; FRCSC, CRCSC; former staff, Calgary General Hospital; consultant, cardio-thoracic surgery, Rockyview General and Holy Cross hospitals; preceptor, University of Calgary; president, cardiovascular thoracic surgery section, and member emeritus, Alberta Medical Association; senior member, CMA. Died Jan. 14, 2004, aged 76; survived by his wife, Nancy, and 5 children. “He was a passionate reader throughout his life and inspired in his children a curiosity about the world and a love of learning. He also ... introduced them to the classic comedians of the twentieth century.”

Matzko, Alexander, Etobicoke, Ont.; McGill University, 1951; anesthesia; FACA, FRCPC; former staff, Montreal General, York-Finch General and Shouldice hospitals. Died Jan. 20, 2004, aged 77; survived by 3 daughters.

Mendelson, Jack, Winnipeg; University of Toronto, 1944; ophthalmology; DABOphth., FICS; former staff, St. Boniface General and Health Sciences Centre-Children's Hospital; teaching staff, University of Manitoba. Died Apr. 13, 2004, aged 83; survived by his wife, Naomi, and children, Dr. Sherry, Peter and Leslie. Sherry said, “He began his career in general practice in Nipawin, Sask., a period that provided colourful stories of rural practice, including life-saving emergency neurosurgery from a propped up textbook!”

Morin, Rosario E., Montréal (Qué.); Université Laval, 1945. Décédé le 15 janvier 2004, à l'âge de 84 ans.

Murphy, A. Patrick, Moncton, NB; University of Toronto, 1944; Capt., RCAMC, WW II; Army Reserve; former staff, Moncton and Dr. Georges-L. Dumont hospitals; physician, Salvation Army Eventide Home. Died Jan. 9, 2004, aged 86; survived by children, Dr. J. Thomas, Kevin, and Carey-Louise. “His hobbies included gardening, photography and carpentry, and he was an avid baseball fan. He took a keen interest in the history of Moncton and its surrounding areas for which he had an encyclopedic memory.”

Offord, David R., Ottawa; Queen's University, 1957; psychiatry; former staff, Chedoke-McMaster Hospitals; founder, Canadian Centre for Studies of Children at Risk — renamed the Offord Centre for Child Studies; recipient, Order of Canada; professor emeritus, McMaster University. Died of cancer Apr. 10, 2004, survived by his wife, Margaret, 4 children and 2 stepchildren. His wife told the Toronto Star: “People always knew the big, imposing man had a gentle soul who wanted to help children. He would walk into a room and people knew he was a special person.”

Orr, William L., Vancouver; McGill University, 1940; diagnostic radiology; FRCPC. Died Jan. 11, 2004, aged 87.

Patrick, Evan, Ottawa; University of Liverpool (England), 1951; internal medicine; FACC, MRCP(Lond.), FRCPC; former consulting cardiologist, Ottawa Civic Hospital and University of Ottawa Heart Institute; assistant professor, University of Ottawa. Died Jan. 12, 2004, aged 76.

Ripstein-Soicher, Riva B., Pointe-Claire, Que.; McGill University, 1944; former staff, Department of Family Medicine, Lakeshore General Hospital. Died Jan. 15, 2004, aged 84.

Robb, Ian S., Halifax; Dalhousie University, 1942; anesthesia; FRCPC; Capt., RCAMC, WW II; former United Church of Canada medical missionary. Died Apr. 27, 2004, aged 87; survived by 2 children. Known for his pragmatic intellect, devotion, determination and courage, he unhesitatingly took his medical acumen and missionary spirit to where it was needed most: theatres of war, revolution and social upheaval.”

Zak, Eva, Hamilton, Ont.; Prague University (Czechoslovakia), 1966; psychiatry; FRCPC; former staff, Brantford General and Lakehead Psychiatric hospitals. Died Dec. 5, 2003, aged 62.
