Gibbon, George W., Englehart, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1938; CCFP; former associate staff, Englehart and District Hospital; district surgeon, Ontario Northland Railroad. Died May 11, 2003, aged 93; survived by his wife, Helen, and 2 children. His daughter, Connie, stated: “By the time Dad retired, he was taking care of a third generation of patients in Englehart, some of whose parents and grandparents he had delivered. He is remembered for his love of flying, his photography, his fossil collection and, especially, the snow plane he had built to take him out to calls in the country before roads were plowed during the winter.”

Died Apr. 26, 2003, aged 80; survived by 3 children. “For many years, he was Vancouver Island's only neurosurgeon. Although his career was cut short by illness in 1976, his passionate pursuit of knowledge endured.”

McCulloch, Peter B., Hamilton, Ont.; University Toronto, 1964; oncology; FRCPC; first oncologist and former head, medical oncology, Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre; professor, McMaster University; chair, Research Ethics Board, McMaster University/ Hamilton Health Sciences. Died of cancer July 31, 2003, aged 64; survived by his wife, Judith, and 3 sons. Dr. George Browman, president of the Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre, commented: “Peter's ability to inspire was his natural talent. Many of us who have come into contact with him have remarked to ourselves, ‘I wish I were just like him.’ This is the greatest compliment one can give.”

Died May 10, 2003, aged 73. “He was responsible for establishment of the Hamilton Civic Hospitals Research Centre, which achieved worldwide recognition.”

Campbell, Thunder Bay, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1947; general surgery; FACS, FRCSC; former chief, surgery, St. Joseph's and Port Arthur general hospitals; chief of staff, Port Arthur General Hospital; examiner, general surgery, Royal College; regional advisory member, CMPA, 1960–93; recipient, Confederation Medal of Canada, 1992. Died June 18, 2003, aged 78; survived by his wife, Heather, and 6 children. Heather Campbell commented: “He retired in 1988 and suffered a stroke in 1992. This limited his activities somewhat, but he was able to pursue his hobby of stained glass, and he directed the planning of our garden and pond from his electric scooter, racing around the yard at hare speed.”

Willoughby, Henry W., Haley Station, Ont.; McGill University, 1962. Died Apr. 15, 2003, aged 81; survived by 2 sisters and 4 bull mastiffs — Hilary, Hortense, Hecuba and Hermiasus. “After many years of cancer research, he practised in Cobden, Ont., until his retirement,” niece Beth Goddard told the local paper: “Harry had monkeys and mice in his research lab at McGill, so I always figured he was a very important person. And he told terrible jokes — no one ever wanted to repeat his limericks.”
