Begg, Robert C., Saskatoon; University of Saskatchewan, 1971; orthopedic surgery; FRCSC; former staff, St. Paul's (Grey Nuns) Hospital; clinical lecturer, Royal University Hospital. Died Dec. 9, 2002, aged 54.

Chrétien, J.F. Maurice, St-Lambert, Que.; Laval University, 1937; obstetrics/gynecology; FACS, FICS, FRCSC; former chief, obstetrics/gynecology, Ste-Thérèse Hospital; medical adviser, Canadian Pension Commission. Died Nov. 28, 2002, aged 91; survived by 5 children. “He was the brother of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, and practised medicine for 65 years.”

Darmasaputera, Budiman, Toronto; University of Saarbrucken (Germany), 1967; former associate staff, Peel Memorial Hospital. Died Dec. 15, 2002, aged 65; survived by his wife, Budiarti, and 2 children.

Doyle, John A., Ottawa; University of Ottawa, 1951; pediatrics; former staff, Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario; chief, Department of Pediatrics, Riverside Hospital; instructor, University of Ottawa. Died Dec. 15, 2002, aged 76; survived by his wife, Helen, and 4 children. “He was one of the first pediatricians in Ottawa. He only wore a tie at weddings and funerals, and in his later years lived in his Teva sandals. He loved to dance, and was buried wearing his dancing shoes.”

MacVicar, Archibald A., Calgary; Dalhousie University, 1942; psychiatry; FRCPC; former director, psychiatry unit, Hotel Dieu Hospital; courtesy staff, Grace and Metropolitan general hospitals. Died Dec. 12, 2002, aged 87; survived by his wife, Gladys.

McGarry, Patrick M., Winnipeg; National University of Ireland, 1946; anesthesia; FFARCS(I.), FACA, FICS, FRCPC; former chief, anesthesia, Grace Hospital; assistant professor, University of Manitoba. Died Dec. 8, 2002, aged 80; survived by his wife.

McKinna, Alfred J., London, Ont.; McGill University, 1952; ophthalmology; FRCSC; RCAF, WW II; professor emeritus and former chair, Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital and University of Western Ontario; chair, Committee on Ophthalmology, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Died Jan. 19, 2003; survived by his wife, Pat, and 4 children. “He had just closed his office after completing 50 years of medical and academic practice.”

Murphy, J. Paul, White Rock, BC; University College of Galway (Ireland), 1951; former chief of staff, Redvers Union Hospital. Died Jan. 17, 2003, aged 77; survived by his wife, Angela, and children Dr. Alan Sean, Paul, Kiaran, Christopher and Anne-Marie. “The family moved to Redvers, Sask., in 1969, and until the arrival of his partner in 1976, he was on call every night and weekend.” Anne-Marie stated: “He intended to be a vet, but a professor convinced him to study medicine. That is a good thing, as he was very kind to people and hunted animals!”

Plumb, Lois M., Toronto; University of Western Ontario, 1946; psychiatry; CRCPC; former chief psychiatrist, Women's College Hospital; visiting lecturer and clinical teacher, University of Toronto. Died Dec. 8, 2002, aged 78.
