Died Feb. 23, 2002, aged 91; survived by his wife, Geraldine, and 7 children. “He will be fondly remembered for his dedication to his family, his profession and his beagles.”

Drowned while vacationing in Cuba Feb. 12, 2002, aged 56. A colleague commented: “He was a beautiful, gentle French man, filled with a joie de vivre.”

Friesen, Gerhard (George), Victoria; University of Manitoba, 1951; general surgery; DABS, FACS, FRCSC. Died Apr. 14, 2002, aged 78.; survived by his wife, Trudy, and 4 children. Colleague Paul Gareau commented: “A second open-heart surgery was followed by an inability to usefully use his left upper extremity, and this forced him to retire from a practice he loved. He rearranged his life to become a keenly competitive golfer who used only his right hand, no mean task for a man approaching 70. I personally lost money to him when he shot an 89 at the Victoria Golf Club.”
