Asymmetrically substituted 5,5′′-diaryl-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridines as efficient fluorescence “turn-on” probes for Zn2+ in food/cosmetic samples and human urine
2021, Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A: ChemistryCitation Excerpt :In the course of numerous experiments, it was found that lozenges containing zinc salts such as gluconate and acetate are the most optimal for the treatment of colds, because these salts release the maximum concentration of zinc in the form of a free cation, which has a therapeutic effect [65–72]. The presence of zinc ion binding agents, such as tartaric and citric acids [66,67,73], hydrogenated palm kernel and cotton seed oils [74] were reported to eliminate the therapeutic effect. Upon taking zinc-containing lozenges the blood plasma became saturated with zinc, while its excess of Zn2+ excretes with the urine [75].

2020, Medical HypothesesRapid review protocol: Zinc for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19 and other coronavirus-related respiratory tract infections
2020, Integrative Medicine ResearchCitation Excerpt :Zinc may also modify the host's response to an infection as it is an essential co-factor element with a broad range of functions in the body. Many of the beneficial effects of zinc appear to take place at the cell membrane.8,21,22 Zinc (Zn2+) reduces the permeability of the cell membrane without penetration into or damage to the cell.
