2020, Food ChemistryCitation Excerpt :The natural and major source of vitamin D for humankind is exposure to sunlight. However, deficiency of vitamin D is prevalent because of seasonal shift and latitude, among those escaping sunlight or apply sun blocks to prevent the chances of skin cancers (Holick, 2004; McKenna, 1992; Sayre & Dowdy, 2007). Its deficiency is also common in dark skin people where melanin pigment behaves as sunblock, in case of infirm or elderly living in assisted living facilities also gets less exposure to sunlight (Holick, 2001).
