Combination nicotine replacement therapy: strategies for initiation and tapering
2017, Preventive MedicineCitation Excerpt :Since the absorption of nicotine is slower from NRTs than cigarettes, NRTs are less likely to cause dependence/addiction while still reaching sufficient concentrations to alleviate withdrawal symptoms (Henningfield and Keenan, 1993; Benowitz, 2008). Studies and meta-analyses have demonstrated that combination NRT improves abstinence rates with a similar incidence of adverse effects compared to monotherapy (Sweeney et al., 2001; Stead et al., 2012; Kornitzer et al., 1995; Cooney et al., 2009; Bohadana et al., 2000; Schlam et al., 2016; Baker et al., 2016; Piper et al., 2009; Smith et al., 2009). Dosing strategies of combination NRT, which are summarized in Table 1, vary between studies (Sweeney et al., 2001; Stead et al., 2012; Kornitzer et al., 1995; Cooney et al., 2009; Bohadana et al., 2000; Schlam et al., 2016; Baker et al., 2016; Piper et al., 2009; Smith et al., 2009).

2016, American Journal of Preventive MedicineCitation Excerpt :The database search yielded 14,998 records, with two records identified from other sources (Figure 1). After removing duplicates and screening titles and abstracts, 587 articles underwent full-text review, of which 123 met the predefined inclusion criteria (60,774 participants).13–135 These trials were conducted primarily in the general population (93 trials), and most trials recruited participants from North America, Europe, Australia/New Zealand, or some combination of these regions (117 trials).
