Thank you for your recent coverage of trans and LGBTQ health needs and issues. It is timely and long overdue.
I would have preferred to see greater self reflection among health providers and researchers and better ethical and social contextual analysis in these articles.
I am queer and androgynous and a published human rights advocate who has taught Health and Society and supervised and published peer reviewed socio medical and socio legal research.
I find it ethically inappropriate for earnest self promoting LGBTQ positive health researchers and health professionals to pressure vulnerable captive populations seeking primary medical care at a Catholic downtown hospital in Toronto to disclose their gender identity or descriptors or their sexual orientation or to participate in any form of clinical research.
The fact that the researchers effectively engaged in field observation in the clinic and verification of sexual orientation and gender identity data by checking patients' files and OHIP health insurance card identifiers raises serious concerns and may have compromised patient confidentiality and ethics.
We are all aware that most patients of all genders and sexual orientations need to disclose their gender and sexual orientation and sexual activities to their primary health care providers in order to receive appropriate care. John Money has been reported to be the scientist who gave shape to the word gender and professed theories that dealt with the development of sexuo-erotic orientation of an individual. He suggested that apart from hormonal influences the environment in which the child grows or develops shapes the child's sexuo-erotic orientation. Still sex and sexuality remain elusive and secretive. National Data register may have data regarding gender identity and it remains far from satisfactory for many cultures and communities still do not respect the choice and sexuo-erotic orientation of a person. Many a time it confuses a person as how to react to a situation or accomodate a homosexual behavior in mainstream of life and living. Many nations do not approve of such orientation or provide opportunities without bias or stigma.
Sex education and its inclusion in the curricula or when it needs to be imparted or who need to teach or what role parents play still remain a bone of contention. Such inadequacies or lack of proper sex education or development of sexuo-erotic orientation lead to sexual aberrant behavior. Such behavior do not teach adolescents that abstinence is better than safe sex.
