We are grateful for the point Dr. Bertrand makes. The probiotics we chose included common, commercially available mixtures of bacteria to inform whether using such mixtures provides benefit for patients. It is perfectly possible that benign Streptococcal preparations could have a greater competitive/inhibitory effect, and merits further investigation.

Unfortunately, the wrong bacteria were used. I have found that my patients who chew one tablet of Streptococcus salivarius a day, not only are relieved of gingivitis and tartar accumulations, but appear to never get strep throat. I am convinced it is through competitive inhibition between Streptococcus salivarius and Streptococcus type B and Streptococcus mutans.
