This was thought to prevent crib death.”

Periti, Giovanni C., York, Ont.; University of Bologna (Italy), 1955; former staff, Northwestern General Hospital. Died Oct. 22, 2001, aged 72; survived by his wife, Giovanna, and 4 children. “He was one of the pioneers to practise medicine among Toronto's Italian immigrants.”

Died Oct. 13, 2001, aged 87; survived by his wife, Claudia, and 4 children. “He was Northern Ontario's only dermatologist for almost 40 years, until retiring at 81. His friends will remember his sense of humour (dry) and his wine (dry).”

Shumak, Kenneth H., Toronto; University of Toronto, 1965; hematology, FRCPC; professor of medicine, laboratory medicine and pathobiology, immunology and health administration, University of Toronto; former president and CEO, Cancer Care Ontario; associate dean, medicine, U of T; physician-in-chief, Women's College Hospital; president, Medical Council of Canada and Canadian Hematology Society; chair, National Blood Safety Council. Died Oct. 10, 2001, aged 59; survived by his wife, Dr. Rene, and 3 children. “He chaired the task force that reviewed the medical curriculum at the University of Toronto and then led the introduction of that substantially revised curriculum. He also took the lead in opening an after-hours clinic at the Toronto–Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre, even though the notion of such a clinic, operated by a private company, was anathema to some.” Colleague Tom McGowan, the clinic head, commented: “He was the person who had to stare down a lot of people who were against [the clinic].” His brother, Dr. Steven Shumak, added: “Ken's many accomplishments and appointments belied his unpretentiousness. He was equally at home in the corporate boardroom, by the bedside, in the research laboratory or at a Blue Jay game.”

Died Oct. 26, 2001, aged 87; survived by son. “He was a good storyteller, and back in his younger days he loved to play tennis.”
