McArthur, Mervin I., Richmond, BC; University of Alberta, 1961; psychiatry; FRCPC; former clinical instructor, family medicine, University of British Columbia. Died Oct 7, 2001, aged 66. Colleague Norman Hamilton commented: “Merv served admirably as Santa Claus for many years at our Christmas Orphan Party.” His obituary added: “Merv was born in Dogpound, Alta., and was the first person from there to go to university.”

Died Oct. 14, 2001, aged 75; survived by his wife, Mary, and children Dr. Linda Bolton, Mark and Bruce. “One of the proudest moments of his career came when he carried the Queen's blood in an accompanying ambulance when she was attending the opening of the new Shaw Festival in June 1973. Protocol demanded this exercise. An accident ensued, with the ambulance being struck by a car at a crossroads, but the headlines stated: ‘No royal blood spilled!’ ”

Zarfas, Donald E., London, Ont.; Queen's University, 1952; psychiatry; FRCPC; former associate staff, Psychiatric Research Institute and Victoria, University and St. Joseph's hospitals; founding superintendent, Children's Psychiatric Research Institute; professor acting chair, Department of Psychiatry, University of Western Ontario; consultant and director, Mental Retardation Services Branch, Ontario Ministry of Health; the auditorium at the Surrey Place Centre was named the Zarfas Room in his honour, and he was first recipient of the centre's Clay Moore Award of Merit. Died Oct. 12, 2001, aged 81; survived by his wife, Dr. Jean. Colleague Joe Berg commented: “He enhanced the quality of life of many who came within his orbit.”
